    Question on recruiting......

How does a high school athlete get on a rivals, scout, etc board. Do they have to go to a combine or multiple combines? I have always wondered. Now that I have been searching on rivals for a couple of years now I just never see anyone from our area on there. You see a couple near Richlands, Tazewell, etc. but none from the LPD, Clinch Mountain, etc. Maybe I am missing them but figured every now and then we would see a few.

Do you have to pay a certain amount to get a profile on there?

You just have to get recognized. A D1 school has to have you on their radar either from a combine or tape, and most of the time, has to have extended an offer to you.

It would do a world of good for kids who are interested in any sport to go to a regional combine and try their luck. If they go somewhere and have 1 good combine w/decent skills and a good 40 time, schools (even mid-major/lower D1) will take a look at you.

To get the most exposure in the least amount of time as far as football, Nike Combines during the Spring/Summer months are the way to go. I've seen kids who are major sleepers get some play from big time programs due to a good Nike Combine in their area. If a player has a good one and shows out, chances are some bigger schools will at least talk to them. The flat truth is that so many kids around here play all 3 major sports and they don't focus just on one as much as it takes to get to an elite level and have the ability to show out at a combine and get recognition.

You just have to be good. The combines are a big help and sending your own tapes to coaches is a big help. That's what the kid from Tazewell did. If you're good, they'll find you. Same deal as with the kid from Tazewell. I don't think there are any D1 kids from the LPD or CMD. With the way Nick Robinson showed at the camp he attended this summer and winner the most outstanding linemen award he won, he could have sat himself up with some offers.

    Re: Question on recruiting......

Yeah--Nick Robinson definitely needs to keep working hard in the offseason on strictly football, keep building his body up to be a lineman on the next level. I don't think he'll ever get the speed needed to be a DE or TE on the next level, but if he keeps growing and gaining pounds he could make someone a nice LT.

Keep going to camps, keep practicing drills everyday, hone his technique as a lineman as much as possible--then go show it. That's what kids from this area need to do if they truly want to go to the D1 level in a sport.

Thanks, I wasn't for sure how it worked to get on their boards. It is a shame more kids from around here don't just go try their luck at some of the combines. There are very few from the area that colleges would take a chance on but you never know.

I hear ya man. I honestly wish we had the #'s for kids to feel like they can specialize in a sport. I think some kids think that they have to play all 3 main sports because they're one of the school's better athletes, and they have to help the school by playing all those sports instead of focusing on one. THAT is where I think consolidation will eventually help out...kids will feel more free to focus on their one strongest sport and leave their weaker ones behind.

It honestly breeds higher level competition in each sport and leads to better players being produced.
